Reducing product failures and increasing productivity
Why Microtraining?
To be and stay successful, an innovative company, developer and manufacturer of mechatronics, spends a lot of time on training and education its staff. However, there are subjects that deserve additional attention:
- Increasing the knowledge of production workers
- Sharing new knowledge that is relevant to the R&D department
- Training new employees
Introductory Microtraining for all employees
The - how and why - of Microtraining is explained to all employees during a monthly meeting. The presentation that is used is presented on the large screen in the company canteen for several weeks.
Sessions about product quality and productivity
The first sessions concern mistakes that are often made during production. The goal is to increase the knowledge and insight of the production workers and to involve them more with development activities. They learn from each others’ experiences. In addition to an R&D employee, different groups of three to five production workers take part in the sessions.
Subjects of the sessions:
- Productivity improvement
- Bottlenecks during the production of an operating panel
- Bottlenecks during the production of a control panel
PowerPoint slides are presented with photographs of products. The participants mention bottlenecks that they experience during their work. Possible solutions are exchanged and discussed. Ideas are written down on a flip chart.
Closing workshop on quality improvement
During the workshop day that is organized every six months, the Microtraining method is also used. Mixed groups of production workers, developers and management take part in short sessions.
The facilitators of the various sessions are instructed in advance to organize the sessions on the basis of the Microtraining structure: Begin with an active start, followed by a short exercise and a discussion, and close by discussing what will be done with the shared knowledge. The results of the first round of sessions are presented to the other groups afterwards. In a second round of sessions, the results are worked out in greater detail.
Subjects of the first round sessions:
- The quality of different products
- Possibilities to improve them
- How to realize the improvements
- What can each individual employee do?
Experiences
The participants are enthusiastic about the Microtraining method. Communication between them has improved. The number of mistakes during production has fallen. The method is used for the weekly meetings with new employees and in situations where new knowledge has to be adapted within a short timeframe. This is beneficial to company management.
