Improving the Environmental Management System
Why Microtraining?
KOSTAL is a company that manufactures electronic car components. Although the company has ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 certifications, its Energy Management System (EMS) does not serve as a catalyst for change; the company feels that there are some areas with regard to its environmental management that can be improved. The company?s board of Directors will be involved in the training process, to underline the importance of improving its environmental management.
The company feels there is a lack of awareness about the benefits of having a good environmental management system. Various ideas were proposed to improve the company's EMS:
- To increase awareness regarding the actions that have been implemented in the last three years in the company?s EMS and the associated benefits
- To demonstrate the impact of what the employees do on the company?s energy management.
- Underline the individual and corporative responsibility for the company?s energy management and create a long-term vision in this area.
Based on the lack of awareness with regard to the benefits of having a good EMS, the chosen topic was clearly to improve the company's EMS. Although the series of sessions may be useful to all the company's employees, focusing on the company's board of Directors will ensure that the company will carry out the decisions that are made to improve the company's performance in the area indicated above.
How was Microtraining applied?
The trainer has mainly used tests and basic information about the company?s EMS. There were sessions to discuss all the objectives the company realized with its EMS and the future strategy to improve it, with PowerPoint slides and graphics. The target group was asked about the level of awareness about the company?s EMS and invited to think about new possibilities and strategies to improve on the existing state of affairs.

What were the experiences?
The evaluation of the Kostal II case was similar to that of the Kostal I case. The modules were different, but in both cases no concrete actions have as yet been implemented. It proved relatively difficult to persuade people of the importance of a better EMS, and create individual awareness commitment. Perhaps in this case the sessions were too short to realize a satisfactory outcome at all levels of the company. The approach to environmental management has not changed in a fundamental way.
